The following marriage contract, which goes back to the year 1297/1879, is of extremely important social value. "Gratitude is due to Allah, the Unique in His Majestic Wholeness, and may His prayers and peace be upon the Apostle, his companions, and his family. This is to make known to whoever reads [this present contract], be they men or women, that the author [of this note] 'Am b. Ahmad Val is wed to Khaddaj the daughter of al-Sayyid al-Mukhtar b. 'Abd al-Jalil, a man who is held in a high esteemed for his nobility and pedigree. The dower of the bride is sixty baysa (Baysa is a roll of fabric, a few meters in length and about and 1.5 meter in width), half of which is deferred. The deferred part is to be paid on three instalments, spreading over three years. One third is due at the end of the first year; the second is due a the end of the second year, and the last is due a the end of the third year. She entered the 'no woman before, no woman after' stipulation
